The Inseparable Connection: Symptoms and Disease
Hahnemann’s logic is uncompromising. He asserts that it is not conceivable, nor can it be proven by any experience, that anything other than health could remain after all symptoms and perceptible phenomena have been removed.
Because the “internal essence” of the disease is a dynamic derangement of the vital force that makes itself known only through symptoms, the disappearance of these signs is the definitive proof of an internal cure. To Hahnemann, the idea that a “morbid alteration in the interior” could remain after the return of perfect health is a logical impossibility.
The Materialistic Delusion of the “Old School”
In a pointed footnote, Hahnemann uses Aphorism 8 to challenge Hufeland, a leader of the allopathic school, who famously claimed that “Homoeopathy can remove symptoms, but the disease remains”. Hahnemann describes this assertion as an “insult to common sense” and a sign of the “dreadful blindness of the old pathology”.
He argues that Hufeland and his contemporaries were trapped in a materialistic mindset, viewing disease as a physical substance—a materia peccans—that could “lurk in some corner in the interior of the body” even while a person feels perfectly well. Hahnemann rejects this, reiterating that disease is an altered state of health rather than a hidden material object.
The Totality as the Only Metric
The sources emphasize that for the “true physician,” there is no “mysterious obscurity” surrounding what needs to be cured. If a patient has been treated in such a way that “no trace of the disease, no morbid symptom, remains,” then the internal, hidden cause has most assuredly been destroyed.
This principle offers the practitioner a “science of certainty”:
