In the progression of the Organon of Medicine, Samuel Hahnemann has already established that health is a state of dynamic harmony and disease is a “spirit-like” derangement of the vital force. In Aphorism 13, he delivers a sharp philosophical blow to the medical establishment of his day, attacking the fundamental way they conceptualized illness.
Disease is Not a “Thing”
Hahnemann’s central argument in this aphorism is a rejection of the idea that disease is a separate, material entity residing within the body. He asserts that—excluding cases that require manual surgery—it is an “absurdity” to regard disease as a “peculiar distinct thing” that is separate from the living whole, the organism, and its animating vital force.
The Materialistic Stamp
According to the sources, the belief that disease is a hidden material substance could only be imagined by “minds of a materialistic stamp”. Hahnemann argues that this misconception has dominated medicine for thousands of years, leading physicians to treat the body as a container for “morbid matter” rather than a dynamic, living unity. This materialistic view is what led to the “old school” practices of:
- Tapping off blood to remove an imaginary “excess”.
- Sweeping the intestines to clear out assumed disease-originating materials.
- Using emetics and purgatives in a vain effort to “scour out” the patient.
A Mischievous Art
Hahnemann labels this materialistic approach a “truly mischievous (non-healing) art”. He contends that by treating disease as an object to be expelled rather than a state of being to be restored, allopathy has given “pernicious impulses” to medical practice that have caused more harm than good.
By contrast, the homoeopathic view insists that the vital force and the organism constitute a unity. Therefore, disease is not a “lurking” substance in a corner of the body, but an altered state of health of the entire person.
